The Charter of Rights in 1982 guaranteed protection of rights equally for women and men. Bill C-31, An Act to Amend the Indian Act, was passed in 1985. This Bill amended the Indian Act in the areas of Status and Membership. By 1992, over 81,000 people had regained status.
