Did You Know? A $1 million increase in the Consultation Participation Fund in 2008-09 means that more First Nations and Métis communities will be able to get financial assistance to help them better engage with industry and the Province on consultation issues. Consultation with First Nations and Métis People The Government of Saskatchewan is developing a new consultation policy with First Nations and Métis communities, especially when government actions or decisions may impact Treaty or Aboriginal rights. The Government of Saskatchewan's goal is to develop a new policy with respect to consulting and accommodating First Nations and the Métis Nation which will result in successful relationships. In January, 2008, the Ministry of First Nations and Métis Relations released the Government of Saskatchewan's Interim Guide for Consultations with First Nations and Métis People (2008) which outlines the Province's interim policy regarding the legal duty to consult until such time a new policy replaces it. Government began this policy development process by engaging Saskatchewan First Nations and Métis Nation, industry and key stakeholders in seeking common ground at its Roundtable Conference on First Nations and Métis Consultation and Accommodation in May 2008. Respective leaders from the key parties who attended the Roundtable appear to have the same goals for meaningful consultation. Now, we need to work jointly and concentrate our efforts on delivering upon those goals. The Ministry coordinates government policies and relations with First Nations and Métis and provides advice and assistance to other government Ministries and agencies on First Nation and Métis perspectives in order to develop common understanding of consultation goals, interests and concerns.
