In March 2008, the Athabasca Development Limited Partnership - a joint venture of three First Nations and four municipalities - won the first ever Skookum Jim Award from the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada, for the Partnership's success in furthering Aboriginal employment and involvement in northern Saskatchewan's mining industry Lands and Resources Treaty Land EntitlementIn Saskatchewan it has been formally recognized that 33 First Nations did not receive the amount of land they were promised under Treaties. Treaty Land Entitlement is a process where the federal and provincial governments are fulfilling Treaty commitments of land made to First Nations. In 1992, Saskatchewan, Canada, and 25 First Nations signed the Treaty Land Entitlement Framework Agreement. Four separate but similar agreements with individual First Nations have been signed since. Under the terms of the agreements, Entitlement First Nations will receive approximately $516 million over 12 years to buy up to 1.95 million acres of land to add to its reserves. Four additional agreements are currently under negotiation.
