About 3,500 people work at mines in Northern Saskatchewan and more than half of those people are residents of the North. The majority of these Northerners are First Nations and Métis.

First Nations and Métis Relations

The Ministry of First Nations and Métis Relations works to improve the social and economic outcomes of First Nations and Métis people and northerners. With First Nations and Métis people making up 15% of the overall population and 85% of the northern population, this Ministry provides the Government with a focused approach to common issues and opportunities.

The Ministry strengthens relationships between First Nations and non-First Nations people in the spirit of the Treaties, and provides Government oversight to ensure ministries effectively consult First Nations and Métis peoples on provincial legislation, policies, permits and other activities that may impact their legal rights and their interests. It also ensures that the Province's commitments, with respect to lands and resources, are fulfilled.

The Ministry works with and beside First Nations, Métis and northern peoples, other ministries, the federal government, local governments, and business to ensure that Saskatchewan First Nations and Métis people and northerners have opportunities to participate in and benefit from economic and social development.

		Ministry Plan and Annual Report The 2008-09 Annual report presents the Ministry's activities and results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009. The Ministry's annual report, as required by legislation, is tabled by the Minister responsible within 120 days of the close the the fiscal year. The Ministry Plan for 2009-10, released with the Budget on March 18, 2009, demonstrates how the Ministry aligns with government’s vision and goals and presents a high level framework for the Ministry’s activities in the upcoming year. The plan contains strategies and actions that will be pursued in the upcoming year, measures to gauge progress, and a financial summary.
