Saskatchewan First Nations and Métis Economic Development Program
Did You Know?

In 2009-10, First Nations and Métis Relations will lead the work required to establish Northern Enterprise Regions (NERs), after consulting with northerners. NERs will help ensure that northerners can take full advantage of economic diversity and growth in the north.

The Northern Affairs Division supports economic growth in the North, with an emphasis on long-term benefits. The focus is on assisting northerners to more fully participate in their own regional economy, and to play strong roles in shaping and planning their economy.

This program assists commercial fishers in the Northern Administrative District.

Enterprise Regions in the North will be new not-for-profit entities, or acceptable equivalent existing organizations, with representation from diverse regional economic stakeholders in keys sectors of the region's economy, communities and other organizations to provide the focus and leadership necessary to build high performing regions.

The Northern Affairs Division manages surface leases for mines on Crown land in the Northern Administrative District, with an eye towards maximizing benefits to northerners.

The Northern Saskatchewan Business Directory (2009) is compiled by the Regional and Program Services Unit of the Northern Affairs Division.

The EQC and NMMS enable northerners to monitor and keep up-to-date on uranium mining activities, as well as provide inputs into company and regulators' decisions about existing operations and new developments.
