Exploratory Treaty Table

The Exploratory Treaty Table between Canada and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations provides the forum for the parties to hold exploratory discussions about the nature of the treaty relationship. Facilitated by the Office of the Treaty Commissioner, the parties establish common understandings on treaty rights and issues as they pertain to child welfare, education, shelter, health, justice, treaty annuities, and hunting, fishing, trapping and gathering.

Treaties, and building upon the treaty relationship, is first and foremost a matter between Canada and First Nations. The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes the primary relationship that exists between the Government of Canada and First Nations. Saskatchewan involvement, as an observer, protects provincial interests.

The first meeting of the Exploratory Treaty Table under its current mandate took place in May 1997. Shortly after, Saskatchewan became an observer at the Table.
